Modes of the Major Scale

F Lydian
A Lydian scale is when you play from the 4th degree of the major scale to an octave above, so for F Lydian, the notes are:

F · G · A · B · C · D · E · F

Each mode has an associated chord that is comprised of the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th degrees of the mode. For F Lydian, this chord is an F Major 7 and the notes it contains are:

F Major 7: F · A · C · E

In the example below, the following can be heard in order:

The notes of the mode F Lydian
The notes of the characteristic chord: F Major 7
The characteristic chord itself: F Major 7
