Modes of the Major Scale

C Ionian
An Ionian scale is when you play from the root of the key to an octave above, so for C Ionian, the notes are:

C · D · E · F · G · A · B · C

Each mode has an associated chord that is comprised of the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th degrees of the mode. For C Ionian, this chord is a C Major 7 and the notes it contains are:

C Major 7: C · E · G · B

In the example below, the following can be heard in order:

The notes of the mode C Ionian
The notes of the characteristic chord: C Major 7
The characteristic chord itself: C Major 7
