Guitar Tab Help
Guitar chords and tablature files come in a variety of formats. Here
are a list of some common formats and the software that you need to be
able to read them:
- .zip
files are compressed files that require a decompression
utility such as WinZip
for Windows in order to view them.
- .gz
files are GNU compressed files that require a decompression
utility such as WinZip
for Windows in order to view them.
- .txt
files are text files that can be viewed using any text editor such as
Emacs or Notepad. They can also be viewed as plain text files using
word processing programs such as
MS Word.
- .crd
files are text files that typically contain just chords.
They can be viewed in the same manner as .txt files.
- .chordpro and .pro
files are .crd files, but because the chords
are enclosed in square brackets, these files are also readable by the
CHORD
utility on UNIX.
- .tab
files are text files that typically containg guitar tab.
They can be viewed in the same manner as .txt files.
- .tef
files are TablEdit files that provide high quality printouts
of guitar tablature and standard music notation, but cannot be viewed
as plain text files. To view them, you need to use
TableEdit, a multi-track
tablature editor.
- .gtp
files are Guitar Pro files that provide high quality printouts
of guitar tablature and standard music notation, but cannot be viewed
as plain text files. To view them, you need to use
Guitar Pro, a multi-track
tablature editor.
- .ps
files are Postscript files that typically provide high quality printouts
of guitar tablature and standard music notation, but cannot be viewed
as plain text files. To view them, you need to use a
Postscript
reader.
- .pdf
files are Acrobat files that typically provide high quality printouts
of guitar tablature and standard music notation, but cannot be viewed
as plain text files. To view them, you need to use Adobe
Acrobat
reader, which is freely available.
- .mtd
files are musicnote digital files, a proprietary format that supports
hi-fidelity music scores but can only be viewed using the musicnotes.com
viewer. If you do not have the viewer installed on your computer, you will
be automatically prompted to install the viewer so you can view the files.
