electric pickups
Review for:DP174 Red Velvet (Passive single coil)
Purchase price of 50 USD
Rating: 4.0
Comments:The low output makes balancing the Red Velvet with the other pickups sort of tricky, but it has a bright, cutting tone that manages to not be harsh. Played through a Blues Jr., it sounds about like I hoped-bright and clean without any "icepick" qualities. I understand that the trade-off between tone and output might make the low output a byproduct of the sound.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Nice blues pickup-it can really "sting" at certain settings, without ever getting too brittle.
This pickup is marketed as a hybrid between a Tele and Strat bridge pickup. Since I like the bridge position on my Tele, it seemed like a good idea, and it is. You get nice tone and real sonic variation between most middle and neck pickups. I'd buy it again, but I'm going to have to be pretty careful matching it up with the rest of the pickups I get for this guitar because of the low output.
